Quick & Easy OSx86 10.5.8 on Samsung NC10 Installation Guide

Hello and happy and healthy new year!
First, I'd like to inform everyone that this installation was done mainly for fun - it is not approved by Apple. Apple doesn't want users installing their operating system on a PC other than Mac... I know, right? But its OK for Apple to allow MS Windows to be installed on their hardware...
That is why PSYSTAR introduced RebelEFI. A software based EFI emulator that enables any PC to install OSX onto. They claim that according to the Digital Rights Law, an end user has the right to install their purchased OS disk on any hardware.
So, if you want to do it the legal way, visit www.psystar.com, download RebelEFI iso and follow to wiki. There's still some tweaks that are involved after installing the OS to enable drivers support.

This guide is based on the information provided by Project OSx86. Lets begin:

Based on my experience, I found an extremely easy and quick way to install OSx86 10.5.8 on the Samsung NC10 netbook, without extra programming and tweaks.
The only hardware modification is to swap the NC10's wireless adapter with the Apple's Airport Extreme miniPCI adapter (You can find the Airport Extreme N adapter for around $20 on eBay).
Another alternative is the BCM4321 broadcom 4321 802.11n wifi Mini PCI-E Card which can be found online for as low as $20.

This guide is for a single bootable installation of OS X. If you are looking for a dual boot configuration you'll find several steps on How-To's on Google and YouTube.
Step 1: Make sure you have the following software downloaded: msiwindosx86.iso, MSI OSX Upgrade Pack v1.5, Paul's Wind utility pack, and finally the SleepEnabler.kext.
Also download MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg from the Apple support site - you will need this later.
Step 2: Modify your system BIOS:
In the "Advanced Settings" tab make sure to set the following:
Hyperthreading: [Enabled]
Processor Power Management: [Enabled]
Legacy USB Support: [Enabled]
Large Disk Access Mode: [DOS]
EDB (Execute Disable Bit) [Enabled]
Internal LAN [Enabled]
Touch Pad Mouse [Enabled]
CPU Power Saving Mode [Enabled]
Fan Silent Mode (Makes no difference)
Step 3: Load up the msiwindosx86.iso and wait for the Mac OSX Installation Welcome screen. Select English (or your desired language) and proceed to the next step.
Step 4: Configuring your Hard Drive partition.
Click on Utilities (in the upper bar), and select "Disk Utility". When the "Disk Utility" window shows up, you'll see your hard drive on the left hand side. elect your drive and on the right side of the screen select the "Partition" tab. Under "Volume Scheme", change "current" to "1 Partition". Click on "Options", and set it to MBR (Master Boot Record), and apply the settings.
Now back in the "Partition" tab, under "Volume Information", name the drive to whatever you choose, and the format to MS DOS Disk, and apply the settings. Next go to the "Erase" tab and change the format to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and click on "Erase" to apply the settings.
Verify the disk in the "First Aid" tab just to make sure the drive is OK for installation. (This hardy happens, but if the disk verification fails for any reasons, re-apply the settings).
Now, quit Disk Utility and proceed to the next step.
Step 5: OS X Installation.
This is a straight forward installation. This DVD will install OSx86 10.5.4.
No need to change or modify anything in this setup. Let it install while you grab yourself a mocha Joe or a snack...
Step 6: Upgrading to OS X 10.5.8.
OK, so you now restarted your new "Macbook Mini" but you want to have the latest OS installed. Here is a quick way to do it:
First, copy all the files I mentioned above to a folder on your desktop (I names mine "Hackintosh").
Unzip "MSI OSX86 Upgrade Pack v1.5.zip, and Paul's Wind utility pack.zip onto the folder.
Before installing the 10.5.8 combo update, go to System/Library/Extensions and remove "RealtekR1000.kext" file.
Now, run the "MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg" file to upgrade your OS but upon completion - DO NOT RESTART!
When the 10.5.8 update is complete it will prompt you to restart - DO NOT RESTART! Go into your folder and run the "MSi10.5.7UpgradeDriverPack_v1.5" file. (Although this program was intended for 10.5.7, it will work with the 10.5.8 as well). Select ALL (Even when it says "skip").
When the MSI Upgrade pack installation is complete it will prompt you to restart - YOU CAN NOW SAFELY RESTART - click Restart.
Step 7: Finalizing the install.
Your system will restart normally but you will still need to modify 2 things:
1) About This Mac.
2) The sleep feature.
Open your folder where you copied all the files to, and open the Paul's Wind utility pack folder. Go to the utilities folder and run the "AboutThisMac.pkg".
It will not ask you to restart, but you will now see your system's information under the Apple menu.
Next copy the "SleepEnabler.kext" file into System/Library/Extensions and restart the computer. That's it! You are done.
It is recommended to run the MSI Upgrade pack whenever there is a security update for 10.5.8. Just run the install after installing the update before restarting the OS. Just to be safe.
If for some reasons the audio is not working download and run this file (Full_Sound_10.5.7.pkg.zip).

Regarding Snow Leopard running on the Samsung NC10. I highly advise against it, simply because Apple has released this update to stop OSx86 installation on Netbooks. Upgrading to 10.6 and above will disable the video drivers, bluetooth and audio - It's not worth it.

10.5.8 features everything you need in your netbook, and more. You will see you have full audio support including the audio jacks, full video support, LAN, and webcam.

If you have any questions regarding this guide please leave a comment :-)

  1. Great.. bootloop after installing the 10.5.8 update!
    What to do?

    ReplyDelete
  2. did you remove the RT1000 file from the extensions folder before installing the 10.5.8 update, and run the MSi10.5.7UpgradeDriverPack_v1.5 file before restarting?

You may want to boot in x mode (safe mode). When booting the system press F8 then type -x and press enter. This should boot up the system normally.

    Good luck.

  3. Almost forgot...
When installing the MSI10.5.7UpgradeDriverPack_1.5 you need to select ALL items (even though it says skip).
    That should work!

Let me know if it did.

  4. mouse response was less ( hardly usable) after the upgrade to 10.5.8. Is there a way to revert settings as with native 10.5.4 ?

  5. The install failed "could not validate the contents of the essentials package"

  7. Are you following the guide to the letter?
    Try this,
When you format the drive, verify the disk - make sure there are no errors after formatting the disk and that the disk supports S.M.A.R.T Technology in the Disk Utility. Sometimes and bad partition format can cause problems with the installation and upgrades.

Again, When the 10.5.8 update is complete it will prompt you to restart - DO NOT RESTART!

  9. Hey don't you guys have trouble with trackpad afte the upgrade then? I can only use the USB mouse the trackpad sometime stalls and is unusable. Also the NC10 went into sleep and the mouse was completely gone -hung? I had to powercycle the NC10. BTW I did add the chameleon RC2 GUI bootloader..

    ReplyDelete
  10. Aad,
The Chamelion RC2 bootloader should not interfere with the OS drivers. You can modify the mouse settings in the system prefernces. That worked for me. Also, because the mouse pad is waaay to small, I use a micro bluetooth mouse and very happy with its performance.

Regarding the sleep situation, you woul need to modify the power settings as well and set put hard disk to sleep - Never. This should resolve the problem.

    Cheers :-)

  11. I just did the upgrade to 10.5.8 too and the trackpad is now all but unusable. It was perfect after initial installation.

Also there was no ethernet after the first install. I'm wondering is it worth going through the process again without the upgrade but using the driver upgrade to install ethernet driver? I really need the trackpad you see.

    Cheers, Glyn.

  12. Glyn,

you supposed to run the "MSi10.5.7UpgradeDriverPack_v1.5" setup again after updating to 10.5.8.

Just plug in any USB mouse and run the MSi10.5.7UpgradeDriverPack_v1.5 installation again and reboot. Upon reboot, the trackpad will work again :-)

    Cheers.

  13. after the 10.5.4 installation, and restarting, it just loops to the welcome screen, and I can't proceed. I read the second comment in this section and it didn't help. Any suggestions? The only thing about my NC10 that might be affecting things is my NC10 is the German model.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ...should also add the german NC10 doesn't have a bluetooth adapter. could that be the problem? I realise I also haven't put in the new WiFi card yet. Either way, I'm getting the famous "Welcome Loop" that's documented all over, but doesn't have a clear solution.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oops. Followed the advice here,
    http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/the_welcome_screen_loop
but didn't see that after you type all those commands, you also have to type 'exit' and enter. am now logged in as admin and carrying on with tutorial. will keep you posted if the rest works or not.

    ReplyDelete
  16. everything seemed to work now. the wifi card arrives later this week, but anyway, you can mod these posts as you see fit.

  17. Thanks for the guide! Just wondering a few things:
    - how do you set up the NC10 function keys?
    - does the VGA output work?
    - how do you control screen brightness?
    - have you set up xcode/iphone sdk on it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous,
    - Function keys can be edited in System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcut + Modifier Keys.

    - Currently VGA output has some issues. You can Google some articles regarding a "mod" but like I said, there are known issues - especially during sleep and start-up mode.

    - Brightness can only be modified in System Preferences, Displays, Color tab, and Calibrate.

    - Xcode is installed by default. I have not played around with the iPhone SDK.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So, appreciate this tutorial. It is indeed easy to get OSX up and running, but a few things -

    - plugging in the power cable while the machine is running seemed to make it freeze.
    - wouldn't boot after that. have to investigate further.

i'm beginning to think one shouldn't really expect to have any sort of close-to-acceptable replacement for a MacBook, as much as this seems like a doable option.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Great guide. I followed it step by step, and so far everything runs fine. However, I have two issues :
    1. The sleep doesn't work. Everytime I closed my lid, I can not wake it up again. So I need to press the power button and restart the machine.
    2. The brightness setting can not be changed.
Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

  21. To Ghaza:
    1) The trick is to touch the power button slightly (not to hold it down). Watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnS8XjQ8Dus
If that doesn't work, reload the Sleep.kext file mentioned in the above instructions.

2)Brightness can only be modified in System Preferences, Displays, Color tab, and Calibrate. You should be able to toggle the brightness there.

    Good luck,

    - Powerboxx

  22. Anonymous,
If you are experiencing problems with the power adapter then there might be a physical problem with your NC10 unit. I have never heard of anyone experiencing power issues after upgrading to OSX...
You can try to check your hard disk for errors in the Disk Utility, and if that doesn't help, you can always re-install the OS and try to see if that fixes the problem.

You are right. A netbook is not a macbook. But it's the closest and cheapest that you can get :-)

    Cheers!

  24. Looks like the MSI update link is dead... I imagine it is elsewhere, but might want to relink it.

Thanks for making this simple! I did this a year ago and kept running into problems. Ended up wiping after a while, but now that I'm trying again I am happy to have found your howto!

  25. Hey,

I'm having trouble finding ' MSI OSX Upgrade Pack v1.5' the link is old and i can't seem to find another anywhere online. could you please post a new link? Cheers!

  26. Hey again,

Finally after a nightmare search I found a working link for the msi osx upgrade v1.5 here:

    Thanks!

  28. Hi Can't seem to change the brightness as described above, could you describe where in the calibration you are able to change the screen brightness? I'm currently writing this on my nc10 in osx so thanks for the posting!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Anonymous,
In the Display Calibration Assistant, go to Target Gamma, and adjust the bar to your liking.
you can do the same in the Target White Point settings.
Also, try Brightness Control software for mac at:
    http://www.splasm.com/products/productbrightness.html

    Cheers!

  30. Hi, does anyone know if adding the broadcom wireless N card requires you to add another arial into the notebook? I've heard the dell one just uses the arial in the nc10, but the broadcom is cheaper, so if it doesn't need any arial fiddling I'll go for that one!

    Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi I almost forgot, I've done the extra pci-e mod to the nc10 (V. fiddly so only for the brave) and just wanted to report that osx has now started recognising my broadcom hd card. When i first put it in it was ignored, but i just got around to adding Ilife/Iwork combo and had to download some updates for them to install and while the updates were installing i got the 'new thingy detected' message. Get in!

  32. As long as the chip is the BCM4321 model, you'll have no probs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi powerboxx, i followed your guide and worked fine apart from when i restart or shutdown and power on again it wont boot up unless i type in cpus=1, have you any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  34. pamparam, re: usb dont work ?

Try pluggin in the usb device and rebooting, it the only way i can get external mice to work but it does do the job, for some reason it need the device plugged in from boot.

  35. Hi , tnx for the great guide I'll be using it as soon as I get delivered and replaced the BroadCom BCM94321MC .
    1. I'd also like to replace the HD with a 320 sata 7200 rpm and 2GB of RAM .... is there any known issue I should know before installing on a freshly new installed HD ??
    2. When you say : "Step 3: Load up the msiwindosx86.iso and wait for the Mac OSX Installation Welcome screen. " do you mean that I have to load that iso on my usb pen by using programs like NetBookBootMaker ??
    3. I found an iso called iAktos S3 10.6.3 v2 that is supposed to work very well on our nc10 .. do you know how to install and if it's a good step to take for a very noob ?

Tnx a lot for the work and the support you give

    ReplyDelete
  36. For those with USB issues, you need to reinstall the MSi OSX86 Upgrade Pack v1.5 again.
If that doesn't fix the problem, its possible that a) the USB hardware is disabled in the bios or b) the installation did not go well... reinstall the OS from scratch. Read the guide thoroughly.

    Cheers!

    POWERBOXX.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Andrea,
    1. 2GB is fine. However, do not install a 7200rpm on any notebook. Why? They overheat very fast, especially in tight spots. In a netbook, everything is built very small and very tight. 5400rpm drive is highly recommended.

2.No. burn the ISO image on a blank DVD disc. and run the Setup from an external DVD drive.

    3. iAtkos S3 is questionable. I would stay away from it. Its not supported by all ATOM based netbooks yet.

    Cheers!

    POWERBOXX.

  38. I got it !! Installed the HD (a 500GB 7200rpm , I already had it in an external case), upgraded RAM and went through all the procedure ... worked like charm even if installation lasted quite a while from usb pen (it seemed to stop various times doing nothing ... ) .
After first reboot before upgrade I had a little problem , usb ports not working so I couldn't put the other files in ... a reboot and starting with the usb pen inserted at gray screen fixed the issue.
Upgraded and fixed all the little problems as described and now I have a perfectly working NC10 running 10.5.8 with Lan, audio (I had to install the full audio pkg for that) , video , blutooth (I perfectly connected my MS5000 mouse and works like charm) .

Next step is installing the wifi card as soon as it arrives and I'll be all set.

Tnx a lot for the great guide it helped very much!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Glad to hear it. Enjoy your new Mac Mini ;-)

    any hel`p?

ps: who to install an kekts file ?? only compy into the extentions ??

    tnanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Stefan,

Yes, The Ecko plus uses a different chipset than its predecessor NC10 models. So, I can't really help you there. This guide is for the NC10 models released between 2008- late 2009.
Google NC10 Ecko Hackintosh to find any updated drivers and kexts files. That is the only advice I can give at the moment.

    Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am also experiencing sleep problems (NC10 2008) - when I reopen the lid, the power button light is on with a black screen The only way to restore is to switch off and on again - any ideas?

installed beautifully on Samsung NC10 , mistakenly let it update, then restarted.Caught in endless "Samsung splash screen / osx logo" boot loop.
Reloaded osx on external usb with netbook loader. Can get all the way to install for roughly 3 min, then "Install Failed".
received error many times / different versions of same OSX.
    Any help/ideas?
    thanks a lot

  47. Hi noob!
In order to get this fixed you'll need to erase the hard disk's partition. Reformat afterwards as you have before and then begin reinstalling the os again. Follow the instructions to the letter and it will be a piece of cake!
    Good luck!
